Rio de Janeiro is one of the best known and visited cities in the world with a population of more than 6 million.
The city lays between mountains and sea, making its geography unique and easily explaining its title of “wonderful city”. Here we find natural beauty and amazing monuments: the Redemptive Christ, the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, the Urca’s hill, the Corcovado and the Sugar Loaf.
Also located in Rio de Janeiro is the biggest urban forest of the world, the Tijuca’s Forest. Rio’s downtown is composed of monuments and public buildings built when the city was the capital of Brazil. They represent one of the biggest cultural collections of the country. Carnival, Brazil’s most popular festivity is at its peak in Rio, attracting millions of visitors from all over the world. It is also the capital of samba and bossa nova.
The city is capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro, in which the cities of Búzios, Cabo Frio, Parati and Angra dos Reis offer world class nautical sports and adventure tourism such as rafting, climbing and many others –, in addition to the historical locations, art galleries and handicraft shops.
In the high regions, the city of Petrópolis was the home to the former summer residence of Brazil’s emperors and is surely worth a visit.
