In a general sense, Rio only has 2 seasons: a “summer” relatively hot and rainy, eventually surpassing  the 40oC (October till May) and a “winter” with mild temperatures, with minimum temperatures rarely crossing 10oC (June till September)

Time Zone

Rio has the Brasília official time (3 hours less than Greenwich). The city is submitted to the summer daylight savings program between October and February, when watches are advanced 1 hour.

The city of Rio de Janeiro houses excellent entertainment options, such as theaters, movie theaters, libraries and museums.

 

National Library

The largest library in Latin America and eighth in the world has a collection of 15 million books. Inaugurated in 1910, the building, with a neoclassical style, with flight of stairs and columns made of marble, forms together with the Theatro Municipal [Municipal Theater], the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes [ National Museum of Belas Artes ] and the Centro Cultural da Justiça Federal [ Cultural Center of Federal Justice ] a place of culture in Cinelândia.

 

Theatro Municipal [ Municipal Theater ]

The Municipal Theater calls for your attention not only for its architectural conception but also by the imposing of its façade and interior beauty. The noble materials used in its construction make this theater – which has a capacity for 2200 – a true culture temple.

Architecture

Academia Brasileira de Letras [ Brazilian Academy of Letters ]

Copy of Petit Trianon from Paris, it was constructed to house the France Pavillion at the International Exposition of Brazil’s Centennial Independence. It also houses a 90 thousand volume library.

 

Copacabana Palace

Pulled down by the National Heritage Institute (IPHAN), it was one of the first hotels to be constructed by the sea. Inaugurated in 1923, it faithfully reflects the European cultural influence from that time with an exquisite style of lodging. Symbol of Rio and preferred by artists, politicians, executives and international personalities.

 

Arcos da Lapa ( Aqueduto Carioca ) [ Lapa’s Arches ( Carioca Acqueduct) ]

Constructed in 1750, it has enormous double arcades. It has 64m of height and 270 m of length. It was made for the distribution of water from the Rio carioca spring, coming from Sta. Teresa. It became a symbol for the Lapa district. And since 1896 it serves as a viaduct for the Sta. Teresa Bond.

 

Forte de Copacabana [ Copacabana’s Fort ]

Built in 1914 with goal of reinforcing Guanabara Bay’s Defence, the Copacabana’s Fort was the stage of the Movimento Tenentista of 1922.

 

Confeitaria Colombo [ Colombo’s Patisserie ]

Founded in 1894, it’s a landmark of the city’s high society opulence from the end of the XIX and beginning of XX century. It conserves the charm of that period in the crystal mirrors imported from Belgium, in the straws chairs and the rich wood carvings.

 

Cristo Redentor [ Redemptive Christ ]

From the height of its 38 m – and 710m from the Morro do Corcovado [Corcovado Hill], the monument was inaugurated on the October 12, 1931. The climb up to the hill is done through the Estrada de Ferro do Corcovado [ Corcovado’s Railway ] – Inaugurated by D. Pedro II in 1884. Elevators and escalators take the visitors to the lowest part of the statue that weighs 1,145 tons.
