For many centuries, São Paulo has been a very tranquil city. This has been changed dramatically with the arrival of a great number of immigrants at the end of the XIX century and migrants on the following century. They were attracted by the coffee crops and later on by the industry and services sector. Then, the city developed and new traditions arrived.
São Paulo is a 11-million inhabitants city, and it’s renowned by being the largest Brazilian population, largest industrial site, largest economic population, a city with the largest immigrants records and the most cosmopolitan of South America. Business, culture, entertainment and gastronomy capital of Latin America, it’s a global city, formed by more than 70 different nationalities and descendants.
WeatherIn the major part of year the weather of São Paulo is mild, with 240C maximum temperature during the day and 18/190C at night. From November till March it’s hot. In these months it’s common to rain a lot everyday, in the afternoon. In this period, don’t leave home without an umbrella. During winter time (June and July) it can rain a lot, with temperatures up to 60C. Time ZoneSão Paulo has the Brasília official time (3 hours less than Greenwich). The city is submitted to the summer daylight savings program between October and February, when watches are advanced in 1 hour. EntertainmentSão Paulo has more than 120 theaters, 71 museums and cultural centers with collections that maintain works of great national and international painters.
Estação Julio Prestes [ Julio Prestes Train Station ] The construction of this station occurred between 1926 and 1938, inspired by the modern American train stations. It has been transformed in a concert hall – the Sala São Paulo de Concertos [ São Paulo Concerts Room ] – housing the headquarters of the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo [ State of São Paulo’ Symphonic Orchestra ]
Municipal Theater Constructed in 1903 and inaugurated in 1911, with a baroque renascentist style, it was inspired on the Paris’ Opera. It stands out for its majestic internal and external construction. It housed the 1922 Semana de Arte Moderna [ Modern Art Week ]. Attached to it we can find the Theater Museum. ShoppingMain route for shopping nationwide, it has more than 240 thousand stores and 72 shopping centers that range from the most exclusive to the most popular. São Paulo is considered one of the main cities in the international luxury itinerary. GastronomyThe paulistan gastronomy is famous worldwide and to lovers of a good cuisine. Considered the second city in the world in the number of restaurants, it has approximately 13 thousand restaurants and 53 types of cookery. There are 500 barbecue restaurants (churrascarias) and 1.500 pizza places in town. ArchitectureMercado Municipal [ Municipal Market ] Constructed in 1933, with a neoclassical style, it’s one of the most representative from the Ramos de Azevedo office. It houses colored glasses as windows with agricultural themes. Nowadays it’s an important supply center with a great variety of food.
Edifício Itália [ Itália Building ] Constructed in 1956, it’s the largest building in town and it houses a terrace with a restaurant on the last floor (42nd floor). On clear days, it’s possible to see Av. Paulista, Pico do Jaraguá [ Jaraguá Peak ] and even the Serra do Mar forest.
Edifício Banespa [ Banespa Building ] Constructed in 1939, the building provides one of the most incredible panoramic views of the city, reaching the distance of 40 Km. In the tower, there’s a photographic exposition about the construction of the building.
Edifício Copan [Copan Building ] Designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1951, it’s the largest concrete structure in town, symbolizing the urban modernity of the Old Downtown
Edifício Martinelli [ Martinelli Building ] Constructed in 1929, first skyscraper of the city, it was its post card picture during a long time. The building is the main luxury symbol from the Belle Époque Paulista. In a certain way, it marks the transition from the Provincian São Paulo, with low level constructions, to the metropolis. HospitalsWith constant innovations, São Paulo is a city in the forefront and generator of knowledge and technology. Largest Latin America metropolis, it has also become one of the major health centers in the world.
